Yellow Jacket Nest.....OUCH !

Pickin squash & got stung twice.:bawling:

Yellow Jackets built a nest in the ground under one
of my squash plants.

Im pretty careful watching for snakes while in the garden
but never thought of a bees nest.........

Kinda sucks because its the one thats been
producing the most squash.

Anybody know of something i can use that wont kill
the plant or posion myself while killing the bees ?

Screw the plant.
Revenge will be soo much sweeter than any squash.
I've been stung too damned many times to have any reservations about the sundown showdown that follows.

Stung two days ago in the lip.

Nothing like up at the end of a wobbling fully extended ladder (replacing the roof's trim), trying to focus on the job and keep from getting vertigo, while wondering if those last few wasps buzzing around (that I did not get while spraying the nests earlier) are going to attack again.

Thankfully I'll be done in the next few hours after another break turns into a few hours on the net.

Here, here.. agreed. Night time, a gallon of water down the whole followed by a 1/2 gallon of gas.... gas rides on top the water to the bottom of the hole...leave a trail to light...stand back....WHOOSH..no more bees!

Flood it out with water. Keep the ground to wet to build nest in.

Stick a couple of chunks of greasy fried chicken on a strip of fly paper and stand it in the garden hanging somehow.
The blue bug light electricutioners work well in the daytime on yellow jackets and on mosquito's at night.
Brake Clean works best but you do not want to use it around any food.

Usually takes a day or two but get about 1/2 cup of sevin dust and throw it on top of the hole. They will dig their way out but when they fly back in they carry the dust to the deepest part of the nest. Won't hurt your plant. I prefer it over gas becuse the little darlings take on a slow death which I enjoy knowing. I may take a second sevin dusting on hole but they will die. Been working for years for me. I like seeing them suffer slowly after what some of them have done to me. :111: :565:

You think that hurts; try getting stung on your bare ass by a scorpion! Ouch.

I used gas plenty for that kind of stuff as a kid; but I would say sclariat's recommendation of sevin dust is probably the best.

Weirdly enough, WD40.

They plain don't like it.

Clear all combustibles from an appropriate area near the nest. Look around, be sure you can find your way around in the dark. Make a torch on a pole. On a moonless night, set the torch in the cleared area and light it. Use a stick to knock down the nest. Leave the area. The bugs will attack the only thing they can see, which is the torch. End of problem.

1stly, yellow jackets nest in the ground, so knocking the nest out with a stick isn't quite so easy. 2ndly, have you actually performed this feat with success? I have to say I am rather skeptical. It seems this might work provided you can wait for a moonless night and the nest is located nowhere around any other light sources and you are very fleet of foot. Therein lies many variables.

You can get an mint oil insecticide for hornets and wasps. It works pretty well and smells great too!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

The following is an excerpt from another website, not from wiki.

Diatomaceous (die-uh-toe-may-shus) Earth, isn't dirt or earth, not even colored like it. It consists of the broken up shells of tiny critters, called diatoms, that lived long ago and died in groups so massive that they can, today, be mined and bull-dozed.

"DE", as diatomaceous earth is abbreviated, has the neat quality of killing insects (insectaside, as some say) It's perfect for natural insect control. (Unfortunately, it kills good ones, like bees and ladybugs, too, so its use shouldn't be indiscriminate.) It is 100% ecologically safe to the environment and non-poisonous to man and beast. In fact, if you've eaten anything made with flour (like Bisquick), you've eaten DE. It's used in commercial grain storage as a means of natural, poison-free, insect control. So, how does it control insects, or kill insects?

Fresh Water Diatomaceous Earth works by slicing open the exoskeleton (outer, hard covering) of insects, causing them to "bleed" to death. (Actually, their insides leak out, they dehydrate and die.) Imagine walking barefoot through a room that has millions of razorblades embedded in the floor. You've got the picture.

When D.E. is sprinkled on the ground, on an ant mound, or mixed with grains, legumes, etc., it slices and dices the insects that walk through it. If you're planning to can or bucketize your own food, mixing in a cup of Food Grade, Fresh Water Diatomaceous Earth will help keep it pest-free. And it won't hurt YOU when you ingest it, 'cause the 'sharp pieces' are too small to cut you, you lucky guy. (In fact, many farmers deliberately mix DE with animal feed to kill internal parasites in farm animals. The D.E. in the animal feces even kills the fly maggots that invariably appear in the patties.) Powder the landing places that flies use for fly control.

You do need to be cautious with your use of DE. It can cause lung problems. (It's a fine dust.) It's OK to eat, but don't breathe it. Use a mask when applying DE. (I think the FDA has now approved it for large-scale eating. If you know otherwise, please let me know.)

Use DE in your poultry's dust bath to eliminate fleas and mites. Add 2% to their feed (or to any animal's feed) to reduce or eliminate internal parasites and worms.

edit: Here is the wiki link for Sevin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbaryl

"Carbaryl is a cholinesterase inhibitor and is toxic to humans. It is classified as a likely human carcinogen by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.)"
